Teams Compete in Baltimore and Tour Loyola University Stadium

July 5th-7th 2010 Team Buffalo and Buffalo Select boarded a bus and competed in the TOP 16 Shootout. The Tournament was attended by some of the best club teams in the country. Recruiting at this event was Loyola University, John Hopkins, Virginia, Harvard, Drexel, Siena, Maryland, Lafayette, Navy, Fairfield, Salisbury to name a few. On the second day all the goalies were miked and the games were filmed by NFL films. The games will be posted online for players to download and edit. Eight BLA players competed in the All Star Game including Brendan Barren, Adam Donner, Brendan Kane, Adam Pressman, Aaron Romanowski, Lucas Walsh, Jeff Wilson and Kyle Zittle (Chris White and Brad Thomas were selected and unable to participate). Despite the 115 degree temperature on the turf, all played outstanding with Jeff Wilson registering a shutout, and Kane and Walsh tallying goals. Other than lacrosse and dinner in the Inner Harbor the players were provided by the Loyola University Coaching staff with an extensive tour of the year-old $65 million Loyola University lacrosse stadium. Many thanks to Coach Ebsary, the former Loyola Captain, and current coach in the BLA for arranging the tour.

SU Shootout Schedule for Team Buffalo Rising Seniors, Juniors & Sophomores

The Syracuse Shootout has not posted the schedule nor field map on their website, however they have sent both out via email to everyone who has registered (thus in their system). If you did not receive this email it means they either don't have you registered yet or they are having a computer issue. Here are the game times:

Team Buffalo and Rising Juniors: Fri 2, 4, and 6:00 and Saturday 11, 1, 3:00

Rising Seniors & Sophomores: Fri 3 and 5:00 and Saturday 10, 12, 2, and 4:00

Please be at the first game Friday and Saturday dressed and ready to warm up 30 minute prior to face-off. Parking is all at the Manley Field House on the SU campus. Bring water jugs as they will have plenty of water. This year the parents that arrive early to put up their tents should probably put them along the left hand side of the complex which is the most central to all the fields. If you are able to bring something as a family to pass and share that is always helpful. We will have 4 teams playing 6 games each on both days.

BLA Rising Senior, Junior and Sophomore Albany Update

The Following was sent in an email to all Senior, Junior and Sophomore team parents. If you did not receive this please contact us. The BLA Seniors and Juniors just completed 6 games each at the highly competitive and recruited Syracuse Shootout. For having to play 6 games in the heat, the teams worked hard, continued to show improvement and showed a general respect for the game. A special thanks goes out to all the families that supported the teams, contributed by taking pictures (will be posted soon) and provided nourishment at the tents. This week is the Skill School. This is a 3-day camp that focuses on refining and developing higher level shooters, defenders, goalies and face-off men. Space is getting quite limited, so if you plan to attend, remember when signing up to select pay by check due to the Elite Team player discount. Your fee is only $140 not the general admission fee of $175. The instruction team is sure to provide all athletes with a rewarding experience. Help spread the word to non-BLA athletes as well. Remember 'You can always become better.' - Tiger Woods. We are excited and grateful that three BLA families will be hosting 3 boys from England attending this camp. This represents the BLA's continue effort to internationalize itself and develop partner club relationships. This weekend all three teams will compete in the Albany Shootout. This is an excellent tournament, run by a close partner organization to the BLA. Attached are directions and a waiver that must be completed. Ignore the roster form. Please bring your completed waiver to the Skill School or to Albany at least 1 hour prior to your first game. There is no practice Monday or Wednesday night due to the Skill School. We have requested a late game start on Saturday (expect noon-1:00) for all the teams so unless something happens out of our control you should only plan on spending the night Saturday night. Also plan to have a program picture in the bleachers of RPI. If any parent wishes to spear head the teams' tent city please let me know and I will provide you the teams' email list to coordinate this. Otherwise, everyone should just plan on bringing something to share. After every college lacrosse game I have ever known of, parents throw a wonderful post game meal. Thank you for continuing that tradition in the BLA. When the schedule is sent to me I will send it out and post it online.

Lake Erie Showcase a Success; Thanks for All the Help

Thank you for all of your effort and character on the field this past weekend. The BLA and you were able to host teams from out of town and 18 colleges. We have only heard positive feedback from everyone. That was the largest number of college coaches at a Buffalo lacrosse event ever and we plan to grow that number by even more next year. Many people volunteered their weekend to work really hard on the fields, concessions and more. We had more sponsors than ever, please try and support them. Again, many, many thanks to everyone.

All BLA Elite Teams To Receive Coaches' Eye Recruiting Service & DVD in 2009

We are really excited to announce that the BLA is once again working with Coaches' Eye, however with expanded benefits to the BLA Elite athlete in 2009. We have worked out a deal with Coaches' Eye that Coaches' Eye will once again travel to Buffalo from their Massachusetts location to tape the BLA Rising Seniors, Juniors and this year the Sophomores. Each player on our teams will receive a game DVD and a 1-year subscription to the Coaches' Eye online service. This amazing deal will be included in your team fee. With a little team reworking, we will be able to offer this much needed service (worth several hundred dollars) to all our aspiring college lacrosse players without changing your BLA team fee very much. We have been working really hard on this type of service for our athletes for over three years. Now BLA athletes will no longer place their profiles on the BLA website, but rather your roster link will go directly to Coaches Eye for all your college recruiting needs. The best part is that Coaches Eye will place the BLA game video coverage right on the BLA athletes profile page. Each BLA athlete can still upload more video if they wish, such as a high school contest. The toughest part in the recruiting process is getting quality film and getting it to the college coaches. Ask any college player or coach, quality video is a must. Now, every BLA athlete will be able to simply email the Coaches Eye link to the colleges of their interest and the coach will be able to immediately view your gave video. This is the future of college recruiting. The days of sending video and having the video tapes pile up on a college coaches desk are numbered. As a former college assistant coach I can assure you coaches will really like the Coaches Eye/BLA concept! (This is coming from a former college coach who used to watch VCR Tapes of players- PAINFUL!) The BLA was started by former and current college lacrosse players who are constantly trying to create a bridge of talent and exposure for area lacrosse players to play in college. Our website and the technology are all vital components to this. For more information on Coaches Eye on Fox News go to: www.myfoxtampabay.com/myfox/pages/Sports/Detail?contentId=8175443&version=1&locale=EN-US&layoutCode=VSTY&pageId=6.1.1 or to go to Coaches' Eye website and learn more go to: www.thecoacheseye.com Remember to circle February 8th on your calendars, we are at Sahlems this year for tryouts. Fall Ball Raffle - Proceeds to Benefit Family In Need

The BLA will be continuing its efforts to raise money for the United Cerebral Palsy of Delaware in care of "Colin Zwickert." Colin is the son of Wesley (Del.) College Head Coach Christian Zwickert who came during the 2007 summer with the Providence College Mini-Camp. Colin was a fully healthy baby until his delivery in October 2006. During delivery, he became stuck and suffered a severe brain injury. He has since been diagnosed with spastic quadriplegic cerebral palsy, along with visual, hearing and swallowing difficulties. Needless to say, the Zwickert's have fallen on some rough times. The lacrosse community's greatest asset is helping one another. Please consider contributing to the raffle we will have ($1 / ticket). We will raffle prizes off the last week. Consider making an additional contribution as well.

There is no u13, Rising Junior or Rising Sophomore Practices July 2. Furthermore, there are not any team practices July 7 or 9th due to the 3-day Skill School. Have a great Canada Day and Independence Day Holiday weekend! Be safe and have fun! Buses: The topic has come up on a few occasions, however the BLA did not budget in this summer bus transportation to and from and tournaments as we have in the past. If this is something parents are strongly interested in the future, we can plan it in next summer.

Host Families Needed for the Skill School

What really makes the summer BLA special is the vast distances players' travel to come together and compete at something they are passionate about. However, this makes it tough for athletes to make the Skill School each day. As of now we are in need of at least one host family, preferably from the Rising Sophomores team for Kyle Bowerman (goalie on rising sophomore team) who commutes from Rochester. Please contact info@buffalolacrosse.com if your family is interested. There may be more so anyone interested please contact us!

The BLA Adopts Colin Zwickert and his Family, Please Help to Support a Family in Need

This summer the BLA has adopted Colin Zwickert as our inspiration and reminder of the importance of helping those in need. The BLA with your support will make a donation at the end of the summer to Colin overall fundraiser effort.(Specifically, the United Cerebral Palsy of Delaware in care of "Colin Zwickert"). Colin is the son of Wesley (Del.) College Head Coach Christian Zwickert who came during the 2007 summer with the Providence College Mini-Camp. Coach Zwickert was Coach Wright's Assistant Coach at Providence College. Colin's life story was a feature article in US Lacrosse Magazine's March 2008 issue. Colin was a fully healthy baby until his delivery in October 2006. During delivery, he became stuck and suffered a severe brain injury. He has since been diagnosed with spastic quadriplegic cerebral palsy, along with visual, hearing and swallowing difficulties. Colin was given his last rights on the day of his birth, however as Coach Zwickert states in the US Lacrosse article: "The positive throughout this is that Colin has proven all of the medical professionals wrong." The Zwickert family has many medial needs including a handicapped accessible van, home modifications, therapies, medical equipment and medication. Please take a moment and see if your family has access to anything that can assist the Zwickerts, and consider making a donation. The BLA plans to send a check at the conclusion of the summer. We will be raising money throughtout the summer via donations and raffles at the Lake Erie Showcase, the Skill School, and other BLA events. If you and your family are able to contribute you can either do so at one of the BLA raffles, simply giving the BLA the money to add to the pool of money or you can pay via pay pals directly online at Colin's website at: http://www.babyjellybeans.com/web/do/site/home?ID=232234

We wanted to thank all the parents and athletes for their patience and for allowing day one run so smoothly considering all the variables. We know sign-in, payments, equipment, waivers and more can be a real headache. Please continue to be patient while we wait to get everything in and delivered to you. It was certainly a day to remember having such large hail fall from the sky. We are certainly grateful everyone was ok. Our gratitude goes out to all the parents, players and coaches who offered a spot in their cars for their BLA teammates in need of shelter. Due to the weather we weren't able to properly kick off the season with introductions and more, we hope to do that Wednesday. Again, thank you to all!

Speed and Performance Training

As the sport of lacrosse grows, the playing field gets more competitive, and the level of athleticism on the field will without question continue to rise. To be the best you can be you not only need to improve your stick skills, and mental capacity for the game, but also improve your athletic ability. Only a combination of great athletic ability, along with mental acuity and sport specific skills can make for a great player. I will be running a 7 day speed and performance training program that athletes can expect to: - Learn some basic fundamentals of the physics/kinetics of acceleration - Begin to form better postural and kinetic habits to enhance speed - Be exposed to high level functional training methods - Begin developing training habits to improve explosive output power in the future - Learn proper form for changing direction and momentum - Work hard and have fun! This will take place at Epic sports center. The dates and times are: 11-12 am, 11/18, 11/25,12/2, 12/9, 12/16, 12/23, 1/6. The cost is $80 for BLA athletes and $100 for all others. There is limited space to ensure proper attention so don't wait if you are serious. For more info or registration email Coach Schickling at: schickling@buffalolacrosse.com

Benefit in Memory of Derek Falkenbach, a West Seneca East Lacrosse coach.

An unfortunate accident took place on the Fourth of July in which Derek Falkenbach, a West Seneca East Lacrosse coach, was struck by a car. He was then transported to ECMC via Mercy Flight where he immediately underwent brain surgery. Derek's fight for life ended sadly on July 14, 2007. Derek is best known for his great sense of humor and vibrant personality, but most of all as a loyal friend with a genuine heart. He graduated from Orchard Park High School in 1999, received an undergraduate degree in Education from SUNY Cortland, and was currently teaching at the Stanley Falk School in Buffalo. His warm heart has led him to devote his time to helping students with emotional and behavioral disorders. Derek has built a bond with each of his students and was dedicated to helping them become contributing members of the community. His compassion and willingness to help others is further demonstrated through his coaching. Dereks competitive edge combined with his love for sports make him a coach that the players of the West Seneca East Lacrosse team respect and looked up to. He will be remembered as a kind, thoughtful person by all who knew him. For more information on the benefit in Derek's memory

Family in Need

The BLA community is quite fortunate to be able to enjoy themselves and compete on the lacrosse field for so many reasons. However most in our WNY community are not so fortunate. Recently a 10-year old girl suffered a life ending injury while swimming off Woodlawn Beach. A fund has been set up to assist her family which had recently moved here from San Francisco and do not have insurance. If you were interested in assisting her family visit any Bank of America Branch in the area and ask about the Bethany Rose Morgan Fund. Please keep Bethany and her family in your thoughts during their time of grieving.
